2nd Magglingen Conference on Sport and Development


December 4 to 6, 2005 - The 2nd Magglingen Conference on Sport and Development, held in Magglingen, Switzerland, from 4 to 6 December gathered over 400 participants from 70 countries. Hosted by the former Swiss president and the Special Advisor to the UN Secretary-General on Sport for Developement and Peace, Mr. Adolf Ogi, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, and the Swiss Federal Office of Sport; the conference represented the culminating event of the 2005 International Year of Sport and Physical Education (IYSPE2005).

The 2nd Magglingen conference aimed to take stock of achievements in sport for development and peace, exchange experiences, present examples of path-breaking ideas, and issue a Call to Action that would encourage a common global framework for policy and action. Participants included the Ministers of Sport of Sierra Leone, Dr. Denis Bright; Zambia, George Chulumandal; Lebanon, Ahmad Fatfat; the Russian Federation, Viacheslav Fetisov; Tunisia, Abdallah Kaabi; and, Brazil, Dr. Angelo Queiroz; as well as a number of prominent athletes, including the former German tennis ace Boris Becker, four-time Olympic gold medalist and Right to Play President and CEO Johann Olav Koss, long distance runner Tegla Loroupe of Kenya, and hurdler Nawal El Moutawakel of Morocco.

As a result of the 2nd Magglingen Conference, the participants endorsed the Magglingen Call to Action, urging governments, sport organizations, athletes, international agencies, the private sector, and other stakeholders to promote sport for development and peace in their activities and programmes. Specifically, the multilateral organizations and the UN systems are called upon to take a lead role in policy dialogue, awareness-raising initiatives, strengthening of networks and coordination, and programme evaluation.
