Partnership initiatives
UNDP is building partnerships with foundations in all regions of the
world. These partnerships combine knowledge, networks and resources
to increase the influence and impact in helping countries find solutions
to their development challenges. These are some of the examples of how
UNDP works with foundations in the areas of:
Democratic GovernanceUNDP supports developing countries around the world in their efforts to strengthen parliaments, electoral systems and processes, improve access to justice and the protection of human rights. It also provides assistance on public administration reform and anti-corruption initiatives, decentralization, local governance, and urban and rural development.Strengthening the Rule of Law Arab States Supported by the United Nations Foundation and the Open Society Institute, this project aims to provide support for the work of the prosecutor’s offices in three Arab countries – Morocco, Yemen, and Jordan. By strengthening the office of the public prosecutor, the project focuses on civil liberties, protection of human rights, access to justice, and effective fight against organized crime and terrorism. Additional support was received from the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. Strengthening Democratic Governance of the Security Sector Latin America & the Caribbean In partnership with the United Nations Foundation, Open Society Institute, and the Canadian International Development Agency, UNDP is supporting comprehensive security sector reform in Latin America. Project activities include promotion of cooperative security policies and confidence-building measures, provision of support to civilian leadership and civil society’s participation in the formulation of security policies, strengthening of national and multilateral actors involved in security sector reform, and development of a regional strategy on security sector reform. Georgia Governance Reform Poverty Reduction/Millennium Development GoalsUNDP advocates for nationally-owned poverty eradication strategies and contributes to efforts at reforming trade, debt relief and investment arrangements to better support national poverty reduction efforts and make globalization work for the poor. In doing so, we sponsor innovative projects, connect countries to global best practices and resources, promote the role of women in development, and bring governments, civil society, and outside funders together to coordinate their efforts.Strengthening Communities in Northern Montenegro Europe & the Commonwealth of Independent States With the support provided by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, this project aims to foster community-based citizen engagement and advocacy for poverty reduction in the region of northern Montenegro. Project activities aim to strengthen around 25 local nongovernmental organizations, through provision of training, establishment of small grants programs, support to educational exchanges, and organization of policy forums and conferences. Platform for Dialogue on the Future of Sao Tome and Principe with Oil Africa In partnership with the United Nations Foundation, United Kingdom, and the World Bank, this project aims to provide assistance to government institutions and encourage citizen participation in management of oil reserves revenue in Sao Tome and Principe. Project activities focus on prevention of corruption and conflict and establishment of transparent mechanisms that allow for citizen’s involvement in the long-term planning of resource allocation. Campaign to Achieve the Millennium Development Goals Global Partnering with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Riksbanken Jubileumsfond, and the Better World Fund, UNDP is supporting international efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015. UNDP initiatives - the Millennium Project, the Millennium Campaign, and the national MDG reports - aim to identify policy action to enable countries to reach the MDGs, raise awareness and monitor progress. Crisis Prevention & RecoveryUNDP acts as a bridge between emergency relief and long term economic and social development, with an aim to prevent future crisis. Through its global network, UNDP seeks out and shares innovative approaches to crisis prevention, early warning and conflict resolution.Balkan Peace-Building Initiative Europe & the Commonwealth of Independent States The Balkan Peace-Building Initiative is supported by the United Nations Foundation and the Government of Italy. It aims to address the challenges of reconciliation in the Srebrenica district by addressing reconciliation and recovery in the region, through the UN/UNDP-led Srebrenica Regional Recovery Programme. Project activities include support for local economic development, civil society, social protection and reconciliation, municipal development and infrastructure rehabilitation. The initiative is envisaged to serve as the model for the development of a broader reconciliation and confidence-building programme to address reconciliation and recovery in other regions of the former Yugoslavia. Transitional Shelter in the Earthquake-Affected Areas Asia & the Pacific Supported by the United Nations Foundation, this project is a part of the UNDP relief and recovery activities in earthquake-affected areas in Pakistan. It aims to mobilize communities for rubble removal and reconstruction efforts, create short term employment opportunities for those affected by the disaster and raise public awareness about earthquake-resistant construction. International Fund for Rwanda Africa In an effort to facilitate reconciliation and recovery process in Rwanda, the makers of Hotel Rwanda, the critically acclaimed film, have partnered with the UNDP and the United Nations Foundation to create the International Fund for Rwanda. The fund will support UNDP projects in the country in the areas of HIV/AIDS, health care, education, livelihood initiatives for returnees and genocide survivors, and support to genocide orphans. Energy & EnvironmentUNDP promotes environmentally sound development and clear affordable energy and helps countries strengthen their capacity to address these challenges at global, national, and community levels. It seeks out and shares best practices, provides policy advice and links partners through projects that help poor people build sustainable livelihoods.Community Management of Protected Areas Conservation Global Supported by the United Nations Foundation, the Global Environmental Facility Small Grants Programme, UNDP and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), this programme aims to demonstrate how community-based initiatives can increase the effectiveness of biodiversity conservation by complementing and adding value to existing conservation programmes. Activities focus on selected World Natural Heritage sites/Biosphere Reserves and globally significant coral reefs. Programme components encompass provision of small grants for activities aimed at strengthening community-based organizations and national nongovernmental organizations; awareness-raising initiatives about the World Heritage Sites and sustainable development; and, promotion of communication and cooperation among parks management personnel and partnerships with other groups at the local and national levels. Equator Initiative Global With support provided by the United Nations Foundation, Ford Foundation, Global Environmental Facility, SwedBio, Germany, Barcelona Forum, Conservation International, and the Nature Conservancy, the Equator Initiative is a partnership that brings together the United Nations, civil society, business, governments and communities to recognize and strengthen grassroots efforts to reduce poverty through the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. Programme activities are organized around four themes: (1) The Equator Prize, recognizing outstanding local efforts to reduce poverty through the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity; (2) Equator Dialogues, a programme of community and local-global dialogues, learning exchanges and meetings that celebrate local successes, share experiences and inform policy; (3) Equator Knowledge, an initiative dedicated to synthesizing lessons from local conservation and poverty reduction practice; and, (4) Equator Ventures, focused on blended finance and capacity development for biodiversity enterprises in the most biodiversity-rich locations of the world. MDG Carbon Facility Global The Footprint Neutral Programme, supported by the United Nations Foundation, is designed to promote activities that focus on ensuring sustainable development through mitigation of climate change and protection of biodiversity. The core of the programme is a mechanism that allows for private sector investment in projects that offset greenhouse gas emissions, protect biodiversity, enhance water quality, and/or promote community development. Through its particular design, this initiative aims at creating a unique market-based, and ultimately self-sustaining, funding mechanism for sustainable development projects in developing countries. HIV/AIDSAs a co-sponsor of the Joint UN programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), UNDP helps countries put HIV/AIDS at the center of national development and poverty reduction strategies, build national capacity to mobilize all levels of government and civil society for a coordinated and effective response to the epidemic and protect the rights of people living with AIDS.Teacher’s Capacity Building Programme in HIV/AIDS in Botswana Africa In partnership with the Merck Foundation, United Nations Foundation, and the Governments of Brazil and Botswana, this programme brought together Brazilian communication experts and Botswana educators and media professionals to support production of interactive resources for distance education, with a focus on HIV/AIDS. A key component of this programme pertains to the development and implementation of an audio-visual HIV/AIDS prevention curriculum in schools throughout Botswana. The curriculum has a special focus on socio-cultural and gender issues relevant to young people as they relate to HIV/AIDS prevention strategies. Digital Broadcast Initiative – Equal Access Asia & the Pacific Supported by the Ford Foundation, United Nations Foundation, William
and Flora Hewlett Foundation, First Voice International, Solaria, University
of Texas, the World Bank, Japan and the United States Agency for International
Development, the Digital Broadcast Initiative aims to provide information
to poor communities on topics that assist in advancing their own social
and economic development efforts. The information is delivered using
donated digital satellite broadcast equipment for audio, video, and
text-based information with focus on HIV/AIDS and gender issues (especially
violence against women). Programme activities are conducted in partnership
with community-based organizations, local nongovernmental organizations,
and the local creative talent, production groups, and media organizations. |
