GSB in Zambia
Launched on 5 October 2005, the GSB initiative in Zambia is actively
facilitating innovative enterprise solutions to poverty in various sectors.
The current pipeline of projects includes the list below.
GSB Projects
Liquefied Petroleum Gas
Lead company: Total Zambia
The programme is designed to invest in a bottling plant for LPG, and
to establish a distribution network for LPG bottles, in order to reduce
gas flaring, reduce domestic charcoal consumption and associated deforestation
and health problems, reduce domestic kerosene consumption, and provide
income generation opportunities.
Solar Energy for rural households
Lead company: Suntech
A programme to deliver a consumer package of panel, regulator, battery
and inverter appropriate for rural households, through a partnership
with microfinance institutions.
Biofuels
Lead company: various
A programme to support investments in the biofuels sector, including exploration
of small-scale processing and viability of outgrower schemes.
Plastics recycling
Lead businesses: Zambian Bottlers, Invesco, Natural Valley
This programme will enable recycling of polyethylene (PET) bottles and
other plastics, to reduce waste and litter, reduce hydrocarbon consumption
and provide income generation opportunities.
Dairy processing and small scale supply
Lead businesses: various
The aime is to increase the supply of quality milk from small-scale
farmers, add value to it and access high value local markets. In partnership
with Land o’Lakes and various medium-sized dairies, GSB is supporting
the development of a business model that could be applied by medium-sized
dairies in Zambia who could potentially invest in processing capacity
and are interested in a partnership with Land o’Lakes that would
deal with quality and infrastructure issues on the supply side.
Cassava processing for maltose and glucose
Lead businesses: Zambian Breweries Group, Freshpikt Ltd.
Sourcing cassava from small-scale farmers to invest in a processing
plant to extract starch from cassava and convert this to glucose and
other syrups used in soft drinks and brewing.
Aquaculture
Lead company: various
Development of pro-poor fish farming investments, as part of a multi-stakeholder
process of policy dialogue and business development.
Supplier linkages programme for retail
Lead company: Spar Zambia
A programme to support local entrepreneurs who could potentially supply
large buyers in Zambia, but who require access to finance and/or technical
assistance to do so.
Community payphones
Lead company: Celtel
Provides finance and other support to entrepreneurs wishing to
set up a payphone business, through partnerships with microfinance institutions.
