GSB in Kenya
Launched
in May 2005, the GSB initiative in Kenya is actively facilitating innovative
enterprise solutions to poverty in various sectors. The GSB Delivery
Mechanism has been established in the country, with a full-time broker
in place in the Expanded Opportunities Unit of the UNDP Kenya office.
A joint launch of the Global Compact and the GSB initiative took place
on 3 May 2005.

Honey for the Bottom of the Pyramid
Lead Company: Honeycare Africa (HCA)
Honeycare Africa (HCA) encourages small scale farmers to begin beekeeping as sustainable source of income. Honeycare Africa that sources and improves the value chain of small scale rural beekeeper now wants expand its product portfolio to reach the Bottom of the Pyramid, by selling and introducing 20g jars to slum areas in Kenya. Fruit Processing
Lead Company: Kevian
Kevian, a local fruit juice manufacturer, has purchased a fruit processing
plant in Thika in an effort to produce its own concentrate, and is engaging
in the setup of a local mango supply chain. Download

Suera Flowers
Lead Company: Suera Flowers Ltd.
Suera is interested in positively impacting the development of the community
while facilitating business growth and is working on introducing a crop
that could provide consistent revenue to the community, which would
have a direct impact on the local economy. Download

Macadamia Nut Processing
Lead Company: Global Entrepreneurs Africa
The project aims to improve the operating conditions of the Mt Kenya
Nuts factory, and improve the livelihoods of farmers supplying macadamia
nuts to the factory, with Global Entrepreneurs ensuring access to the

Micro-insurance for informal traders
Lead Company: The Co-operative Insurance Company of Kenya
Ltd. (CIC Insurance)
This project will help CIC Insurance to roll out its micro-insurance
product at a significantly higher rate than to date, targeting 15,000
informal traders in the first phase, engaging with MFIs and trader organizations.

Eco-camp with local community benefits
Lead Company: Gamewatchers Safaris
The project aims to ensure the local community a stable source of clean
water, alternative to the waterhole used by wildlife, thus supporting
the commercial success of the eco-camp and allowing the community to
benefit from its agreed share of the proceeds. Download

Celtel Kenya project
Lead Company: Celtel Kenya Ltd.
With only 5 million out of 36 million Kenyans on a cellphone network,
there is a vast potential market of Bottom of the Pyramid consumers
who still lack telephony. By creating a broad network of independent
community payphone entrepreneurs, Celtel can tap into this as yet unreached
