Launch of the Nigeria Visualised

Abuja, 27 November 2023 –The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in collaboration with the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning and the National Bureau of Statistics, launched the "Nigeria Visualised" web platform and report. This innovative initiative marks a significant milestone in the utilization and democratization of data for national development and planning. 

In an era characterized by an unprecedented surge in data flow, "Nigeria Visualised" stands out as a pioneering effort. Utilizing the latest in data and advanced visualization techniques, this initiative is set to transform the way we understand and engage with data. It aims to unravel the dynamic transformations that Nigeria has undergone, highlighting the immense power and potential of data in shaping our perception of a nation. 

The "Nigeria Visualised" initiative comprises a web platform and a comprehensive report, featuring over 40 detailed data visualizations. These visualizations, sourced from a rich blend of hard and soft data, offer an in-depth and multifaceted exploration of Nigeria’s landscape and its diverse population. Through compelling visual storytelling, "Nigeria Visualised" presents an insightful narrative about Nigeria's evolutionary journey, emphasizing the country’s diverse culture, socioeconomic trends, and developmental milestones. 

Speaking at the launch of the Nigeria Visualised web platform, the UNDP Resident Representative Mr. Mohamed Yahya thanked the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning and the National Bureau of Statistics for the important collaboration. He added that “The overarching objective of the platform has been to democratize access and enhance the availability of crucial data to monitor and respond to the evolving socio-economic, cultural and ecological dynamics of Nigeria.”

Honorable Minister of Budget and Economic Planning of the Federation, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, CON, stressed the importance of the initiative to showcase the transformative power of data for meaningful insights to reflect the progress we have made, the challenges we face, such as climate change, and the untapped potential that awaits exploration.

Honourable Minister for Youth Development, Dr. Jamila Bio Ibrahim in her good will remark, expressed appreciation for the dedication to empowering the youth and fostering innovation through the forward-thinking initiative. She added “the Nigeria Visualised web platform is a testament of the transformative impact of collaborative efforts on the society and reinforces the importance of international partnerships in driving positive change” 

Present at the launch, the Statistician General of the Federation, Mr. Adeyemi Adeniran also highlighted “the visualization project serves as a timely enabler that marks a significant milestone in the journey towards enhancing the level of data literacy in the country, offering a veritable tool for showcasing and disseminating Nigeria’s socioeconomic data landscape” 

Speaking on behalf of the Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Mr. Matthais Schmale, Mr. Nonso Obiliki the UN in Nigeria Economist stated that the project is apt towards full implementation of government policies and programmes in the country. He emphasized that, “to meet the UN 2030 agenda for sustainable development requires that we continue to track key indicators of progress that we need in Nigeria. The UN through instruments of the SDG framework has committed to supporting the government in reporting and documenting important data for the SDGs trajectory in the country.”

The launch provided an exclusive first look at the web platform and report, along with insights from key contributors and thought leaders in the field of data analysis and national planning. The products are publicly available at https://nigeriavisualised.net/
