The onset of COVID-19 dealt a severe blow to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMSEs) in Nigeria, exacerbating the nation's pre-existing socio-economic challenges. Many found themselves teetering on the brink of closure, while others scrambled to pivot and adapt. In this turbulent landscape, the UN Basket Fund Project, spearheaded by the United Nations and partner agencies, emerged as a beacon of hope, reigniting optimism and empowering beneficiaries to fortify their enterprises against future uncertainties.

Among the narratives of resilience, the journey of Mr. Dogala Sakpege, a beneficiary of the UN One Basket Fund Project, stands as an inspiring testament. Dogala's entrepreneurial odyssey began in 2008 after he was laid off from a multinational fertilizer organization plagued by financial mismanagement. Undeterred, he ventured into candle production, initially investing a modest sum of N160,000 in raw materials. However, by 2020, the costs surged to an unsustainable N1.6 million.

In response to this financial challenge, Dogala adeptly diversified his business into petroleum jelly and hand sanitizer production, the latter proving particularly timely given the pandemic's escalating demand. Recognizing the potential for transformation, the UN Basket Project intervened, embracing SMSEs and equipping them for the road ahead. Beneficiaries, including Dogala, received comprehensive training in business management, covering crucial aspects such as product quality standards, business planning, record-keeping, sustainability, occupational safety, and health.

Dogala emphasized the incredible experience of receiving vital assistance from the International Labour Organization (ILO), World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and UN Women. Collaborating to support individuals like Dogala, these organizations conducted extensive training sessions in Lagos and Enugu states, empowering participants to enhance their production expertise, irrespective of their initial career backgrounds.

Influenced by UN Women's training focus on gender inclusivity and sensitivity, Dogala integrated these principles into his company's core values. Committed to fostering a workplace characterized by diversity and inclusiveness, he deliberately employed three women and one man. This intentional approach reflects his dedication to creating a work environment that values and embraces individuals from varied backgrounds and perspectives.

Reflecting on this transformative experience, Dogala expressed profound gratitude, stating, "The training was invaluable. It was something I cannot compare to what I knew before. I always cherish what I have gained from them."

Dogala not only specialize in hand sanitizer production but also committed to upholding the highest product quality standards.

The impact of this intervention extended beyond Dogala's personal success. He not only specialized in hand sanitizer production but also committed to upholding the highest product quality standards. "Once they taught me standards, I adhered to them. Today, I pass on this knowledge to the next generation of entrepreneurs," proudly declared Dogala.

The real measure of success lies in tangible results, and in Dogala's case, it echoes the impactful intervention of the UN and it partners. With the knowledge and equipment provided by the UN Basket fund Project - implemented by the following UN Agencies - UNDP, UN Women, ILO, WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, UNIDO and UNAIDS, Dogala and his team achieved the production of up to 6,000 bottles of hand sanitizer. Dogala attributes the thriving state of his business to the collaborative intervention of agencies, expressing enduring gratitude for the profound assistance that continues to significantly impact his journey.

This narrative epitomizes the transformative potential of collective efforts, emphasizing that in the face of adversity, resilience and community support pave the way for extraordinary triumphs.
