Gender mainstreaming
The Government of the Netherlands continues to be a leading advocate
for gender mainstreaming within UNDP. The Organization's corporate gender
strategy is designed to integrate the promotion of gender equality effectively
into all activities by:
- Developing capacities, within UNDP and in programme countries, to
integrate gender concerns in all practice areas
- Providing gender-responsive policy advisory services that promote
gender equality and women's empowerment
- Supporting specific interventions that benefit women in programme
countries.
In 2005, UNDP's Gender
Thematic Trust Fund received a contribution of US$5.5 million from
the Dutch government. This contribution supported the Corporate Gender
Strategy and Action Plan for 2005, which recognizes the need to strengthen
and reinforce UNDP's internal capacity on gender mainstreaming. The
funds have supported 45 Country Offices, four Regional Service Centers
and five Headquarter units to follow a comprehensive set of activities
for effective and systematic gender mainstreaming.
At the headquarters, regional and country office level, these funds
are supporting a broad range of initiatives that are designed to bolster
the gender component in development. For instance, Cote d'Ivoire is
now working with five other crisis countries on a model to mainstream
gender effectively in crisis situations. In New York, UNDP's Learning
Resource Center, which is in charge of developing capacities and knowledge
management systems for the Organization, is developing training programmes
for staff on "the role of men in promoting gender equality".
