Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  1. How does the United Nations Peace Fund for Nepal differ from the Nepal Peace Trust Fund?
The United Nations Peace Fund for Nepal (UNPFN) was established to complement the Nepal Peace Trust Fund by funding activities that could not be funded or implemented through the latter. It is designed particularly to enable rapid delivery of essential peace support activities that are responsive to the demands of a fast-moving environment.

The UNPFN focuses on four clusters of activities: cantonment/reintegration, elections/governance, security, and rights and reconciliation whereas the Nepal Peace Trust Fund is used to finance activities in the following five priority areas: management of camps and reintegration of former combatants, rehabilitation of internally displaced people, election of a Constituent Assembly, strengthening of law and order and police administration, and support to the peace process.

  2. Who may contribute to the UNPFN?
Contributions may be accepted from governments of Member States of the United Nations, intergovernmental or non-governmental organizations or private sources.

  3. Who can submit requests for funding from the UNPFN?
Any Participating UN Organization (UN entity) that has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Administrative Agent is eligible for funding under the UNPFN and may prepare and submit project proposals. Non-UN entities, such as international and national organisations, interested in applying for funding to the UNPFN may submit projects through a relevant Participating UN Organization.

  4. What is the expected duration of the UNPFN?
In accordance with the UNPFN Terms of Reference, it is anticipated that the UNPFN will last up to two years on the assumption that broader reconstruction and peacebuilding needs can be handled through existing mechanisms, including direct funding of Government entities or implementing agencies. The UNPFN will terminate upon completion of all projects funded through the UNPFN and after satisfaction of all commitments and liabilities.
