Advocacy for the MDGs: Why is it important?Effective advocacy and campaigning is important because it can help trigger and increase the awareness on MDGs. This can guide toward meaningful action that translates into mass mobilization, an improved dialogue among stakeholders, and ultimately into change in policies. Consistent with the call in the Monterrey Consensus for a "global information campaign," advocacy and mobilization were established as one of four key elements of the UN's Core Strategy on the MDGs. If the MDGs are to be achieved by 2015, meaningful action must accelerate dramatically. Although attention and activity on the MDGs has significantly increased since the adoption of the Millennium Declaration in September 2000, there is still a long way ahead. UNDP is working on advocacy for the MDGs. At the global level, advocacy is particularly focused on Goal 8-develop a global partnership for development and in support of country level outreach activities and development programmes.
