Co-Chair Madeleine Albright and Kivuth Kibwana, Acting Minister of Lands in Kenya, in Nairobi's Toi Market.
Legal Empowerment was in Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia late November to hear firsthand the concerns of people living and working in the informal economy.

Co-Chair Madeleine Albright visited Nairobi's Kibera slum and Toi Market, and met with African leaders to highlight the link between empowerment of the poor and fighting poverty.  See more photos of the Toi Market

"There is a hidden potential if poor people become a part of the legal system, are given rights to their lands and are able to participate in their economies," Albright said. "People living in poor conditions don't want to be victims.

The visit coincides with Legal Empowerment's launch of National Consultation Processes in
East Africa.  Legal Empowerment is partnering
with grassroots organizations to directly
involve the poor in these consultations,
among them the Huairou Commission.
