Democratic Governance

recipient of microcredit poses in front of her businessIn the last 25 years, Latin America and the Caribbean have made enormous progress at the level of democratic governance. The 2009 Millennium Development Goals Report, affirms that among the developing regions, Latin America and the Caribbean are at the forefront in terms of the political representation of women.

However, the region is still grappling with the effects of violent conflicts in various countries. In parts of the region, social and political stability are threatened by economic and social inequalities, and reforms at the political, social and civic levels have been called for.

UNDP aims to contribute to the region’s efforts to strengthen democracy and its institutions, to consolidate the rule of law and to promote the participation of members of society.

To achieve this, UNDP works in the following areas:

  • Knowledge management, including promoting inclusive participation (especially for women, young people, persons with disabilities, people of African descent and indigenous groups)
  • Strengthening government institutions so as to ensure better conditions for human development.
