In addition, it is anticipated that climate change will increase the impact of natural disasters on vulnerable populations. According to the 2009 Millennium Development Goals Report, the region registers the second lowest coverage of improved drinking water in rural areas.

UNDP supports the design and implementation of sustainable development programmes based on each country’s needs and the Millennium Development Goals. Progress is measured according to the Implementation Plan of the 2002 Johannesburg Global Summit Sustainable Development.

The program helps countries to:

  • Design and implement economic policies in support of sustainable development
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions
  • Adapt to climate change
  • Preserve biodiversity
  • Manage risks
  • Supply low-cost renewable energy to disadvantaged groups in remote areas

  • Financial mechanisms in support of the environment
  • Natural disasters and knowledge management
