HIV/AIDS
Outside of Africa, the Caribbean has the highest HIV prevalence rates
in the world. UNAIDS estimates that there are 380,000 adults and children
living with HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean.
With the mandate to address the governance issues surrounding HIV/AIDS,
UNDP's activities surpass the medical vision of the epidemic to one that
acknowledges the personal, social, political and cultural determinants of
it.
Regional programmes and projects
UNDP’s Leadership for Results programme for instance, launched
a multi-sectoral response to the epidemic in the Caribbean. This initiative
was implemented in 7 Caribbean countries. It is estimated that more than
50 initiatives resulting from the Leadership Development Programme have
impacted the lives of thousands of people in the region.
The results achieved in the Caribbean are: committed leadership, policy
changes, better care and support for people living with HIV/AIDS, reduction
of stigma and discrimination, and increased participation of people living
with HIV/AIDS.
