The majority of the countries and territories in the Caribbean
are "Small Island Developing States" with unique development
challenges associated with small size and vulnerability. The status
of “middle income” countries can sometimes be a misnomer
due to the susceptibility to natural disasters and the challenges associated
with globalization.
UNDP has been active in the region, supporting the efforts of countries
in the areas of governance with specific reference to areas such as
public sector reform and the strengthening of the health sector; supporting
dialogue to address the challenges of crime and electoral differences;
disaster risk management; establishment of effective monitoring mechanisms
to monitor advances in poverty reduction and achievement of the MDGs;
and supporting transformative leadership strategies and strengthening
the ability of the Caribbean to respond to HIV-AIDS.
