Study Paper No. 5 Acknowledgments The Transitions from HIV
to AIDS research project was conducted from October 1993
to March 1995, based at the original National Centre for
HIV Social Research in Brisbane and Melbourne. This paper
was prepared at the National Centre in HIV Social
Research: People Living with HIV/AIDS and Their Carers
Program, La Trobe University, Melbourne from January to
August 1997. This project is indebted to many people and far too many to mention here. Steven King was actively involved in the AIDS community in Australia before his death in 1994 and contributed substantially towards focussing interest on issues for those in the terminal phases of AIDS. Professor Beverley Raphael pushed vigorously for this research to be conducted in a difficult research climate and was particularly determined that the voices of PLWH/A be heard in social research. Thanks too must be extended to Elizabeth Reid at UNDP (HDP) who was especially eager to see the research compiled and published when the departure of the research team to various destinations appeared to have abruptly concluded it. The availability of a room and resource support at the National Centre in HIV Social Research was also critical in ensuring the completion of this work. Finally, our most heartfelt appreciation goes to those thirty-eight people living with AIDS who offered so much in sharing their stories. Many are no longer with us but we hope that this might be another small way in which they will be remembered.
Biographical note Geoffrey Woolcock is a Ph.D. student and Research Assistant, School of Politics, La Trobe University, Australia. He worked at the National Centre for Social Research from 1992 to 1994, and was Education Manager at Queensland AIDS Council in 1994 and 1995. His thesis work-in-progress analyses the affect of various social movements prominent in the evolution of HIV/AIDS in Australia and overseas. |
