Human Rights and Gender Background Paper
This Discussion paper was prepared for the round table on human rights, gender and HIV/AIDS convened by UNDP, UNHCR, UNIFEM and the Global Coalition on Women and AIDS during the 2005 UN General Assembly High Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS. The Paper argues that if the dual and synergistic challenges of gender equality and respect for human rights are not addressed, the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals and the targets of the Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS will be jeopardized.

 

From Involvement to Empowerment - PLWHA in Asia and Pacific
The complex challenges posed by the HIV/AIDS epidemic calls for an extraordinary set of responses. Years of engagement with the epidemic have brought home a fundamental realisation that the active participation and support of People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) are critical for an effective, humane response to HIV/AIDS. It has been reiterated in several countries where the reversal of the epidemic has an indisputable link with the conscious efforts to respect the fundamental rights of PLWHA. It has also been convincingly expressed in international treaties and commitments.

 

Human Rights and HIV/AIDS: International Guidelines
The purpose of these Guidelines is to assist States in translating international human rights norms intro practical observance in the context of HIV/AIDS The Guidelines recognize that States bring to the HIV/AIDS epidemic different economic, social and cultural values, tradition and practices- a diversity that should be ce;lebrated as a rich resources for an effective response to HIV/AIDS.

 

No Safety Signs Here - Study on Migration and HIV Vulnerability in Asia
Although the linkages between migration and HIV/AIDS have been acknowledged across the world, the Asia-Pacific region has witnessed only limited research and activity on migration patterns and routes, and HIV vulnerabilities related to unsafe migration processes. This study endeavoured to examine general migration trends and processes in the region in the context of HIV vulnerabilities based on secondary data analysis. It also drew on government policies on migration and HIV/AIDS.

 

From Challenges to Opportunities - Response to Trafficking and HIV/AIDS in South Asia
Through this publication, the UNDP Regional HIV and Development Programme (South and North East Asia) aims to share some innovative and path-breaking initiatives led by a few civil society partners in responding to the complex nexus of vulnerabilities of women and children in South Asia. It highlights the borderless nature of both the HIV epidemic and of trans-border human trafficking, which is becoming the third largest form of illegal trade after drugs and arms trafficking.
