Democratic Governance Practice Network (DGPNet)

UNDP's Democratic Governance Practice promotes knowledge leadership and innovation in governance. It is a voluntary, flexible community based on common professional interest among UNDP staff involved in governance issues across all levels and locations. Members of this community of practice share and learn from each other's knowledge and experience and develop new ideas. This serves to strengthen the global governance community and enhance local, regional and global knowledge sharing and application.

The horizontal nature of the Practice architecture allows for a meshing of cross-thematic initiatives at the global, regional and country level — offering UNDP new types of knowledge sharing opportunities, and providing a support structure to build signature services.

The foundation of the Practice's knowledge sharing initiatives is the Democratic Governance Practice Network (DGPNet).

About DGPNet

DGPNet is a global electronic network open to UNDP staff and UN staff working on UNDP projects. It serves as an internal, global exchange forum focusing on new and upcoming national, regional and global activities and resources available within UNDP's governance community. It is also a tool for sharing comparative experiences and good practices and for discussing substantive issues related to democratic governance.

DGPNet has 1,500 members representing all of UNDP's thematic groups and more than 100 country offices. Membership continues to grow steadily. The Democratic Governance Practice is being strengthened by greater interaction through its DGPNet e-mail group and wiki as well as during face-to-face community of practice events.

Services

  • Regular exchange of experiences, lessons learned and good practices in democratic governance, concentrating on providing direct assistance to UNDP country offices by consolidating the real-time responses of colleagues around the world in response to their queries;
  • Discussions on a wide variety of democratic governance policy and practice issues including discussion of policy and practice notes;
  • Debates that shape the practice and positions of UNDP on key democratic governance issues;
  • Present all other general news items and information that is of merit to HURITALK members.

DGPNet links governance focal points of country offices with their counterparts around the world, including with Policy Specialists and Advisers at headquarters, in the regional and thematic centres, and in country offices.

DGPNet members shape and enhance the capacity of the network to foster a proactive and relevant knowledge-sharing environment for everyone within UNDP's governance community. It is an informal network that 'belongs' to its members.
