The Global Environment
Facility (GEF) Country Dialogue Workshops (CDW) Programme
is designed to promote country ownership of GEF co-financed activities,
facilitate national coordination on countries' GEF programmes, and
enhance awareness of the GEF. This is achieved by engaging in a
direct two-way dialogue between the GEF and member countries through
targeted,
participatory workshops on the GEF and national priorities. The
Programme is one major component of a new GEF outreach and communications
strategy.
The main objective of the Workshops is to facilitate group dialogues
amongst and between the participants, the GEF and its implementing
Agencies, the Convention Secretariats, and the Scientific and Technical
Advisory Panel (STAP). The workshops effectively allow the GEF to:
- Inform a broad national audience about the GEF, including its
mission, strategy, policies, procedures and governance;
- Facilitate national stakeholders' input to, and information
sharing on, the country's priorities including national coordination
efforts, to ensure that national priorities are fully reflected
in GEF assistance; and
- Provide practical information on how to propose, prepare and
implement GEF-financed activities.
Between the period April 2000 when the workshops were initiated,
and April 2004, 49 GEF CDWs have been conducted. A total of 75 countries
have participated in 45 national and 4 sub-regional CDWs during
this period. On average, a workshop is being conducted every three
weeks.
