Global Environment Facility (GEF)

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) is a partnership that includes the GEF Assembly, GEF Council, GEF Secretariat, and three Implementing Agencies (UNDP, UNEP, World Bank). Restructured in 1994, the GEF is a Trust Fund that serves as the financial mechanism for the Convention on Biological Diversity and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. As of September 2003, the GEF was accepted as a financial mechanism for the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. In addition, the GEF serves as the interim financial mechanism for the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants. The GEF's mandate is guided by these global environment conventions, collaborates with other international agreements, and is evolving to include others. The GEF brings together countries from all over the world, including over 160 member governments, as well as other international organizations, bilateral development agencies, national institutions, non-governmental organizations, private sector entities and academic institutions.
