Defining Productive Uses of Renewable Energy

Productive uses of energy services are divided into two broad categories:

  • Those that increase the range and/or scale of economic activities, and for which local groups/individuals are required to make an investment; and

  • those that enhance people's productivity, for instance, through improved health and education, which are a part of public infrastructure development.

For the purpose of this programming website, the following definitions of 'productive uses' of RETs will be used:

  • In the context of providing modern energy services in rural areas, a productive use of renewable energy is one that involves the application of energy derived mainly from renewable resources to create goods and/or services either directly or indirectly for the production of income or value.

The term productive uses refers broadly to enhancing income generation opportunities and productivity in rural areas, for example, small industry, agriculture, commercial activities, telecommunications, education and health facilities, clean water, refrigeration, to improve quality of life and increase local resilience and self-reliance.
