UNDP's Adaptation Portfolio

What we do - Portfolio

UNDP has a large pipeline of adaptation-related projects for both enabling activities and for piloting adaptation through the GEF adaptati

on funds. The portfolio of pilot projects at advanced stages is worth $58 million in GEF funding for 20 projects in 41 countries. The pipeline of pilot project proposals in earlier preparation stages is currently worth $150 million in GEF funding. Project summaries for UNDP-GEF's current adaptation portfolio can be accessed through the Portfolio Database. All focal area projects in the UNDP-GEF portfolio can be accessed here.

National Communications

UNDP provides extensive support to non-Annex I Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), including Brazil, China and India. With 100 Second National Communications, the UNDP has the largest enabling activity portfolio among the GEF Implementing Agencies. Go to the National Communications Support Programme (NCSP) website. National Adaptation Programmes of Action (NAPA)

The UNDP is working with 29 Least Developed Countries to prepare their NAPAs, 15 of which are in Africa, and is also ready to assist them to implement the completed NAPAs. (Access NAPA website) (UNFCCC list of submitted NAPAs).

Thematic Areas

During the adaptation pilot phase, the UNDP portfolio will support adaptation in 6 Thematic Areas.

Adaptation Learning Mechanism

The UNDP places learning at the center of its philosophy and took the lead in developing the GEF's Adaptation Learning Mechanism for managing knowledge and good practices about adaptation.

Approach and Methodologies

The majority of project proposals are being developed using the approaches presented in the UNDP's Adaptation Policy Framework. These approaches lay down basic principles starting with current climate conditions as a basis for coping with future climate. Additional UNDP documents on adaptation can be accessed in the Supporting Materials page.
