The United Nations Climate Change Conference in Poznań, Poland - COP 14
The 14th session of the Conference of the Parties to the Climate Change Convention (COP 14) will be held in conjunction with the 4th Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP 4) in Poznań, Poland, from 1 to 12 December 2008. The conference will also include the 29th sessions of the Convention’s two subsidiary bodies - SBSTA and SBI – as well as the 4th session of the AWG-LCA and the 2nd part of the 6th session of the AWG-KP. New publication: Climate Change at UNDP: Scaling Up to Meet the Challenge
This paper presents UNDP’s strategy to support the efforts of developing countries and vulnerable groups for scaling up mitigation and adaptation action to successfully meet the climate change challenge and achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). In close partnership with all concerned UN agencies, and other development partners such as the World Bank and the regional development banks, environmental bodies such as the GEF, as well as NGOs, the private sector and civil society. New publication: Reducing threats to protected areas: lessons from the field - A Joint UNDP and World Bank GEF Lessons Learned Study
This paper is a joint effort between the biodiversity specialists of the World Bank (WB) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to enhance the quality of Global Environment Facility (GEF) and other biodiversity projects. The UNDP and World Bank biodiversity teams undertook a study of a number of their GEF biodiversity-funded projects to identify and analyze the effectiveness of different intervention strategies in production landscapes and their impact in reducing pressure on protected areas. The intent of the study was to derive general lessons, both positive and negative, that will assist in improving the design and implementation of projects aimed at strengthening protected area systems. UNDP-GEF scores side event success at CBD COP9: UNDP-GEF held two well attended side events – one on support to PoWPA, and the other on Biodiversity and Business - at the ninth meeting of the Convention on Biological Diversity Conference of the Parties (Bonn, Germany, from May 19-30, 2008).

GEF side events on Biodiversity Strategy, Indigenous Peoples, and Sustainable Financing for Protected Areas also benefited from UNDP participation, while CBD events including preparation of the Fourth National Report, the Towards 2010 Guidebook, and the EU-China Biodiversity Partnership enjoyed substantial support and participation from UNDP-GEF.

Green power for rural areas in India
In Karnataka, a new biomass gasifier plant that uses carbon neutral biomass to produce electricity for rural villages is supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF)/UNDP, India Canada Environment Facility and the Government of Karnataka, and is managed and run by the community. March 24

'UNDP praised for outstanding collaboration in early action Protected Areas project' The Convention on Biological Diversity Executive Secretary Ahmed Djoghlaf has congratulated UNDP and GEF in his opening address to the Second Ad-hoc Working group on Protected Areas.
