The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) was designated by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) in 1991 as one of its three Implementing Agencies. The GEF was established to forge international cooperation and finance actions to address critical threats to the global environment. The GEF provides grants to support projects in the areas of biodiversity, climate change, international waters, land degradation, phase-out of ozone depleting substances, and persistent organic pollutants.
