UNDP
COUNTRY COOPERATION FRAMEWORKS AND RELATED MATTERS
EXTENSION OF THE FIRST COUNTRY COOPERATION FRAMEWORK
FOR THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA (1998-1999)
Note by the Administrator
1. The first country cooperation framework (CCF) for the Republic of Korea was approved by the Executive Board at its first regular session 1998 for the period January 1998 to December 1999.
2. The Government of the Republic of Korea has expressed interest in continuing the UNDP programme beyond the present CCF. This extension is within the funding parameters of the original CCF. However, the Government requires time to review the substance, cost and structure of the continuing UNDP programme in the Republic of Korea. Plans are under way to finalize this review by February 2000.
3. The Government has therefore requested an extension of the current CCF for one year. This will allow UNDP to continue with the development and implementation of its ongoing programmes and projects in the areas of poverty alleviation and welfare enhancement, gender equality and the advancement of women, protection, regeneration and management of the environment and natural resources, promotion of science and technology, and cooperative projects in the Republic of Korea.
4. The extension will provide sufficient lead-time for a comprehensive review of the CCF in 1999, enabling the review to become the basis for the formulation of a new CCF. The country review will pay particular attention to the results achieved, bearing in mind Executive Board decisions dealing with the focus of UNDP.
5. Since UNDP is the only agency with a country programme in the Republic of Korea, the extension of the present CCF by one year will not have an impact on harmonization of the programme cycles in the country.
6. Against this background, the Administrator wishes to inform the Executive Board that he has approved the extension of the country cooperation framework for the Republic of Korea for a period of one year, beginning on 1 January 2000.
