The third phase of Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova Anti-Drugs (BUMAD) was launched at the beginning of February, with 2.2m euros committed for the coming two years. The Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova Anti-Drugs (BUMAD) programme is a regional initiative funded by the European Union and UNDP since 2003 to tackle drug trafficking from and through the three countries to EU member states. Drug-related problems have steadily worsened over the past two decades in all three countries, and represent serious impediments to peace and development. BUMAD takes a multi-dimensional approach to the problem, providing legal assistance, strengthening land border control as well as monitoring and enforcement capacity, and supporting community activities and NGOs working in the area of drug prevention and reintegration of former users. The main objective of the third stage of the BUMAD programme in Belarus is twofold: strengthening national capacities to counter illicit drug smuggling through the state border and inside the country, and preventing drug addiction among children and young people. Work will also continue on developing relevant legislation and bringing it in line with the UN conventions. Additional specialized technical equipment will be provided to bodies engaged in fighting illicit drug trafficking; training on modern concealment methods and creating structures in line with international standards will also contribute to ensuring the sustainability of programme results. | 'Renewing Hope,Rebuilding Lives: Partnership between the United Nations and the European Commission in Post-Crisis Recovery'(2008) Download the report Success Stories | ||
