Programmes

The partnership between the European Commission and UNDP has grown considerably since its start in 1997. By 2005 the two institutions were working together in more than 50 countries in all.









Africa

  • Electoral assistance programme, DR Congo

    Main objective: The polls were an historic step in a peace process designed to end a five-year civil war in the country, which affected six neighboring countries and killed some four million people. Read more...

  • Support to the Nigerian national census

    Main objective: UNDP, in collaboration with the EU, is helping Nigeria to carry out its first national census, which will generate indicators that will be useful for the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs), serve the development planning purposes of the Nigerian government and facilitate the organization of future elections.   • Liberia: Disarmament, Demobilization, Rehabilitation and Reintegration Programme

    Main objective: After the signing in 2003 of the Accra Comprehensive Peace Accord 103,000 ex-combatants needed to be disarmed, demobilized and transported back to their settlement of choice. Thanks to the partnership with the EC 13,000 ex-combatants participated in 2005 in skills and vocational training. Read more...
  • Mozambique: Land Mine Clearance

    Main objective: The EC’s contribution of Euro 1,076,051.00 supports UNDP’s initiative to build the capacity of the Institute of National De-mining (IND) in particular and the Government of Mozambique’s mine action programme in general. As of June 2006, Mozambique has destroyed 45,549 unexploded ordnances (UXOs). Read more...

  • Kenya: Contribution to the financing of the Great Lakes Process

    The support to the International Conference on the Great Lakes region including the EC support has been vital for the process. The timeline of implementation is very dependent on the political situation. The UNDP support is being implemented in 11 countries and all country offices have contributed to this process and technical assistance has been provided by UNDP at regional level also. At the regional level the support has been provided through the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary General for the Great Lakes region.





Arab States

  • Palestinian Territories: Mobilizing Civil Society during Elections

    Main objective: The immediate objective of the project “Mobilizing Palestinian Civil Society during Elections” was to engage Palestinian civil society through active non-governmental civilian organized groups ahead of, as well as during, the local and legislative elections of late December 2005 and late January 2006, respectively, in the occupied Palestinian Territory (oPt).

    The project was funded by the EC in the amount of Euro 300,000 with UNDP as the executing agency. The EC and UNDP worked closely on the formulation and design of the project including the selection of the NGOs, which were the implementing organizations. Read more…

  • Somalia: Mine Action Capacity Building

    Main objective: The socio-economic impact of landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) are apparent in almost every aspect of Somali society: reduced land availability for livestock and agricultural production, increased transportation costs, poor performance of rehabilitation and development efforts, increased challenges in repatriation and reintegration, disability and loss of life, and a general lack of security. In 2005, 18 police officers were trained in EOD which complements UNDP support to the creation of seven EOD teams (of six members each) in Somaliland (five teams), Puntland (one team), and South/Central (one team).   • Sudan: Contribution to United Nations Joint Transition Fund for the Government of Sudan Controlled areas (JTF)

    Main objective: JTF is funding the Recovery and Rehabilitation Programme (RRP) which aims to build confidence in the peace and start the long process of capacity-building within local government and the rehabilitation of rural infrastructure specifically associated with agricultural productivity at the community level.   • Afghanistan: Support to the Establishment of the Afghan Legislature (SEAL)

    Main objective: UNDP Afghanistan, in close collaboration with the Government of Afghanistan, launched its Support to the Establishment of the Afghan Legislature (SEAL) project in February 2005 to ensure the timely establishment of the Afghan National Assembly and to provide strategic support to its functioning. UNDP’s comparative advantage in this regard lies in its experience in providing capacity building assistance for the strengthening of legislative systems in a number of countries emerging from conflict.   • School for Broadcast Media, Indonesia

    Main objective: Implemented jointly by the EC, the BBC, UNDP and the Government and NGOs of Indonesia, will provide high quality training to the Indonesian media industry and professional media associations.   • Sri Lanka: Infrastructure Rehabilitation - Post-Tsunami reconstruction

    Main objective: After the Tsunami the institutional and physical capacity of municipal waste management bodies in Sri Lanka needed to be enhanced in order to cope with short term demands due to the tsunami cleanup and long term waste management solutions which meet the needs of new and existing communities. Key infrastructures with major strategic and humanitarian value were rebuilt, particularly in the sectors of transport, sanitation and social infrastructure. Read more...
  • Indonesia: Rehabilitation of electrical system

    Main objective: In East Bacan, North Maluku, electrical cables measuring a total of 88.5km including 67.1 km high voltage (20kV) overhead lines and 22 km of low voltage overhead lines were installed. Around 15,000 people benefited from the rehabilitated electrical supply in 10 target villages.


Europe and the CIS

  • Southern Caucasus Anti-Drug Programme (Armenia, Azerbaijan Georgia)

    Main objective: The program aims to harmonize legislative frameworks, drug law enforcement tactics and operational techniques across three countries in the Caucasus region. It intends to bolster national drug control measures by creating a common basis for the development of cross-border operations, optimising procedures for internationally controlled deliveries, collection and sharing of drug intelligence.   • Central Asia: Border Management in Central Asia (BOMCA)

    Main objective: The European Commission is financing the Border Management Programme in Central Asia (BOMCA) since 2002. BOMCA Programme aims at enhancing security in Central Asia, reducing the flow of illicit traffic through the countries of the region and contributing to an increased flow of persons and legal goods across Central Asian borders. UNDP implements and coordinates the Programme through its country offices in all Central Asian countries.

  • Sustainable Transfer to Return-related Authorities (SUTRA), Bosnia

    Main objective: The European Commission is supporting a UNDP initiative to help Bosnia and Herzegovina take over responsibilities from the international community for assisting hundreds of thousands of refugees and other displaced people return home. Read more...
  • Albania: Demining high and medium impact areas of Albania and Establishment of National Clearance Capacity

    Main objective: The EC is contributing to the Mine Action Programme of Albania through UNDP with two projects: The Technical Survey and Clearance (TSC) project, with an EC contribution of 2 million Euros, covering the period September 2003 / May 2006. The aims of the Project were to establish a clearance capacity of six demining teams, fully trained and equipped and to contribute to the clearance process of high and medium impact areas.
  • Partnership for the Future (PFF), Cyprus

    Main objective: The PFF aims to contribute to the peace-building process in Cyprus through different levels of intervention ranging from urban infrastructure rehabilitation to assistance to small and medium-sized enterprises as well as the de-mining of the Buffer Zone. Read more...

  • Programme for Democratic Development in Latin America (PRODDAL)

    Main objective: PRODALL for which the EC will contribute € 950.000, aims at stimulating Latin America's capacity to reinforce democracy by means of formulating new strategies for regional development. The general objective is to establish, in partnership with Latin American governments, UNDP, non governmental and international organisations, a broad Agenda for the strengthening and development of democratic governance in the sub-continent.   • Haiti: Electoral Support

    Main objective: Preparations for local, legislative and presidential elections in Haiti in 2006 had to start from scratch. There was no infrastructure. Registration offices, electoral offices in departments and local communities simply did not exist. There were no means of communication or transportation, while electoral expertise was lacking.
    Together with other donors the European Union, through UNDP, contributed US$20,481,389, in support of the electoral process in Haiti.


  • Local Risk Management and Disaster Preparedeness in the Andean Region (DIPECHO)

    Main objective: DIPECHO aims to boost the response capacity of vulnerable sections of the population living in disaster-prone regions of the Andes. It will strengthen local capacities to cope with natural disasters through a whole series of activities to build the knowledge, capacity and resources available to the most vulnerable sectors of society, which are generally the worst affected by such events.
