UNDP has a varied and increasingly extensive relationship with institutions of the European Union. While the core of its partnership lies with the European Commission, it also has relationships with the European Parliament and with the European Council.

Together with its member states’ bilateral programs, Europe is the world’s largest aid provider. Moreover, the EU has deep historical, political and economic ties with many developing countries.

The European Commission and UNDP are close and natural partners in promoting development and humanitarian assistance all over the world. The EC is both a key policy partner and a major contributor to UNDP and to the United Nations.

In June 2004, UNDP and the European Commission signed a Memorandum of Understanding establishing a strategic partnership that outlines the “shared goal of establishing the solid foundations for peace and recovery from crisis and of promoting the Millennium Development Goals, particularly, the fight against poverty.

This partnership covers the areas of:
democratic governance,
conflict prevention, and
post-conflict reconstruction

including the broader post-conflict agenda such as relief, rehabilitation and development (LRRD) and transition issues. More...
