1. How do I find out if my community initiative or project is located in an area that is eligible for the award?

Eligible initiatives must be located in a developing country that is located in the Equatorial belt, 23.5ó latitude above and below the equator. If the community initiative or project is located in a country that is partially within the Equatorial belt, your community initiative or project must be inside the Equatorial belt.

2. How can I nominate a community initiative or project?

A nomination form and additional information may be obtained in these ways:

  • Write to the Equator Initiative office by email - EquatorInitiative@undp.org

  • Write fax or telephone the Equator Initiative office for more information.

3. Must I fill out the nomination form in English?

You may fill out the nomination form in English, French, Portuguese or Spanish.


4. What are the selection criteria for the awards?

Criteria for the awards recipients are the ability to demonstrate:

  • Impact

  • Partnerships

  • Sustainability

  • Innovation and transferability

  • Leadership and community empowerment

  • Gender equality and social inclusion

5. What kinds of community initiatives or projects are eligible?

  • Innovative projects promoting the sustainable use of biodiversity while alleviating poverty.
  • Projects with emphasis on community partnerships with:

  • Non-governmental organizations (NGO's)

  • Other members of civil society

  • Private sector

  • Government

  • Other communities.

6. How does the Learning Exchange Programme work?

  • The Learning Exchange Programme is the second component of the Equator Initiative and will follow the Awards component.

  • Following the conclusion of the Equator Initiative Awards, a process will be announced whereby community representatives from developing countries can apply to learn from the Equator Initiative award winning communities.

  • Further information about the launching of the Learning Exchange Programme will be available on this web site in September 2002.
