Research and Learning Data on the diverse experiences of Equator Prize nominees is a rich source of information that may be used to better understand those factors that influence the organization of successful initiatives at the local level. This data is also vital for understanding the cross-level linkages between local communities and the decision making process. The accomplishments of the 840 community initiatives that were finalists for the 2002 and 2004 prize, through their efforts towards eradicating poverty and protecting their biological heritage, mean that they can play an indispensable role in formulating policy at the local, national and global levels. Research Programmes The Equator Initiative is working in close collaboration with a number of universities and research institutions to investigate and examine different aspects of the Equator Initiative's work and the activities of grassroots organizations engaged in biodiversity conservation and poverty reduction.
