Securing Africa’s Future: Biodiversity and Health – HIV/AIDS

Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania
9 - 11 June 2004

AGENDA

9 June, 14:00 – 15:30 Workshop Session 1
Linkages Between Biodiversity and Health and HIV/AIDS: Overview and Facts

This session will set the landscape for the workshop and will be divided into two sections. In the first, speakers will address the variety of linkages that exist between biodiversity and health, highlighting, in particular, the disease linkages that develop as a result of human interaction with livestock and wildlife, and the health implications of agricultural practices, land use, and resource management. In the second section speakers will focus on describing the nature and impact of HIV/AIDS as a health issue in order to establish its relationship to biodiversity conservation for later sessions. Speakers will provide basic information about the disease, prevention, and treatment in order to establish the groundwork for a dialogue.

“Breaking the Silence” Discussing the Stigma through Community Conversations

This session is designed to create an encouraging environment for dialogue about HIV/AIDS and its impact in the lives of workshop participants, their organizations, and the livelihoods of the local communities that they work with on biodiversity conservation. UNDP’s HIV/AIDS Response Team will lead this session utilizing its past experience in developing group dialogues about the disease to present activities and discussions that allow workshop participants to open up about their experiences with HIV/AIDS. This will be an opportunity for participants to become comfortable discussing the disease and sharing their feelings, thoughts, and experience with others.
