The evening of 19 February 2004 saw the culmination of Equator Initiative activities at the Community Kampung take place in the Equator Prize 2004 Awards Ceremony. Held in the Grand Ballroom of Kuala Lumpur's Legend Hotel, the ceremony drew a remarkably diverse crowd of almost 600 people - from Asian government ministers to African tribal leaders. The ceremony itself accompanied a Malaysian meal and included speeches and presentations by a host of global leaders from the development and conservation communities, including Achim Steiner of IUCN, Prof. A. H. Zakri of United Nations University/IAS, and Alvaro Umana of UNDP. Also present was Nicole David - Malaysian Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations and world squash phenomenon - and distinguished guests from many nations. The most important guests of the evening, however, were the representatives of the 26 finalist communities, from which seven outstanding winning projects were recognized at the ceremony.
