Equator Initiative
Showcase Exhibition
Barcelona Forum 2004

The Equator Initiative is pleased to be the sponsors of a major exhibition at the Barcelona Forum 2004 on the topic of biodiversity conservation and poverty alleviation. The Equator Initiative invites members of the public to visit the Barcelona Forum and to visit the “Biodiversity” exhibition and other spectacular venues.

The Equator Initiative’s exhibition, “Biodiversity”, is located in the Haima – a 16,000 m 2 tent designed to house fifteen global exhibitions dedicated to issues of peace and the resolution of economic, cultural, and environmental conflict. Since the venue is located at the heart of the Forum’s Barcelona venue and is expected to draw up to 5 million visitors, it represents an ideal opportunity to convey the message that biodiversity conservation and poverty reduction are inherently complementary and must be linked if global sustainable development targets are to be reached.

Visitors to the exhibition are invited to travel through time to the year 2015, the date the United Nations has set as the target for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Exhibits include visual installations, music, dancing, markets, games, workshops, food and public debate. For further information on the Barcelona Forum’s MDG-themed exhibitions, please visit here.

In the “Biodiversity” exhibition, the Equator Initative focuses on its goal of expanding public understanding and awareness of how local communities manage environmental change apply innovative approaches to biodiversity conservation and poverty alleviation. The exhibition represents a unique opportunity to preesnt the outstanding work of communities from the developing world in a way that helps visitors to the Forum understand both the importance of sustainable use of biodiversity and the everyday impact that biodiversity has on their lives. The exhibition also highlights the experience of particular communities that have received the prestigious Equator Prize. These highlighted communities include Honey Care Africa (Kenya), the Talamanca Initiative (Costa Rica), and Bolsa Amazônia Brasil).
