Africa
Senegal – On 6 June, 2007 UNDP Senegal
and the Ministry for the Environment and Nature Protection celebrated
World Environment Day and Equator Prize Finalist, Collectif des Groupements
d’Interests Economiques des Femmes pour
la Protection de la Nature (COPRONAT). Many exciting programs were presented
during the event including an exhibition of children’s drawings. Members
of the community of COPRONAT were invited and honored with a special
Equator Prize certificate.

Asia Pacific
Philippines – Two Equator Prize Finalists,
Center for Empowerment & Resource
Development (CERD) and The Pederasyon sa mga Nagkahiusang mga Mag-uuma
nga Nanalipud ug Nagpasig-uli sa Kinaiyahan Inc. (PENAGMANNAK), were
recognized for their outstanding sustainable development and biodiversity
conservation efforts on 13 June, 2007. UNDP Philippines and the Global
Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF-SGP) held the awards ceremony
and presented a special Equator Prize certificate for both community organizations.

Latin America and Caribbean
Costa Rica – On the occasion of
the Internaitonal Day for Biological Diversity, UNDP Costa Rica, the
Ministry of Environment, GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP) and their partners
held an official ceremony for Equator Prize finalist, CoopeTárcoles
R.L. – Cooperativa
de Pescadores Artesanales de Tárcoles on 22 May 2007. A representative
of the community received a special Equator Prize certificate at the ceremony,
and the community conservation efforts were highlighted in the local magazine “Environmental
Opinion”.

Ecuador – Hosted by the UNDP Ecuador,
the Ministry of Environment and the Ministrty of Energy and Mines, the
Equator Prize finalist, Federación Plurinacional
de Turismo Comunitario del Ecuador (FEPTCE) and Asociación de Mujeres
de Isabela “Pescado Azul” were honored and celebrated on the
occasion of World Environment Day. The success story of the Pescado Azul
was featured in Quito’s
daily newspaper El Comercio on 31 May, 2007.
Guatemala – As part of a forum
entitled "Adaptation
to Climate Change: a challenge for Guatemala", UNDP Guatemala held
a ceremony to honor the Equator Prize finalist, Asociación para la
Conservación de la Reserva
Indígena BIOITZA and the winner, Alimentos Nutri-Naturales. These
events were held in celebration of World Environment Day. Each community
spoke of their experiences and environmental concerns in Guatemala and
received a plaque from UNDP country Director, Xavier Michon. The Minister
of the Environment, as well as representatives from academia, NGOs and
local communities participated in the events and celebrated the remarkable
achievement of these communities.
