23 October 2006 - - MDG Support Services - Energy Costing Tool - A crucial part of developing MDG-based national development strategies is MDG costing, which quantifies the specific financial and human resources needed, as well as infrastructure required, to meet the MDGs. The Energy Costing Tool has been designed specifically to help government planners and decision makers estimate the amounts and types of energy investments required to meet the MDGs.

 

28 September 2006 - Energising the MDGs: going beyond business-as-usual to address energy access, sustainability and security - This article highlights the critical importance of sustained, political commitment, articulated through a national energy vision and priorities, supported by public budgetary allocations. It also points to carbon financing as an excellent opportunity that goes beyond the limits of public finance to help accelerate transition to more sustainable energy systems.

 

5 June 2006 - Video - Renewable Energy in Namibia. UNDP and Namibia's Ministry of Energy help builid the country's capacity for renewable energy. A UNDP GEF project is helping pave the way for increased solar energy applications, especially in rural areas of the country. The project will help deliver the financing for household installation of solar systems as well as installing solar panels on public buildings, such as schools and health clinics. Play video.

 

25 May 2006 - White Paper for a Regional Policy: Geared toward Increasing Access to Energy Services for Rural and Peri-Urban Populations in order to Achieve the Millennium Development Goals - Member States of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Region have decided to engage on an ambitious regional policy in order to increase access to modern energy services. In that process, their objective is to allow at least half of the population to have access to modern energy services by the year 2015.  This White Paper, produced by ECOWAS with support from UNDP and the French ministry of Foreign Affairs, describes this policy and sets time-bound regional targets that are ambitions but necessary for the achievement of the MDGs.

 

May 2006 - Energizing the Millennium Development Goals: UNDP's Key Messages on Energy - This leaflet presents UNDP's key messages on energy and was launched and distributed at the CSD-14, the fourteenth Commission on Sustainable Development. The annual United Nations intergovernmental negotiations on environment, took place at UN Headquarters in New York from 1 to 12 May 2006. As part of a two-year cycle, CSD-14 (and CSD-15 in 2007), was tasked to review progress in the thematic cluster of energy for sustainable development, industrial development, air pollution/atmosphere and climate change

 

23 May 2006 - The UNDP hosted Energizing the Millennium Development Goals: KNOWLEDGE EXPO was held from May 3 to May 5, 2006, during the fourteenth session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-14). The Expo featured a keynote address by Jeffrey Sachs, Earth Institute at Columbia University, and many panel discussions and exhibits on energy and MDG topics. 18 May 2006 - Expanding Access to Modern Energy Services: Replicating, Scaling Up and Mainstreaming at the local level is a joint publication by the UNDP and Columbia University. This report is about making progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals by expanding access to modern energy services. It demonstrates that micro-level energy initiatives implemented through community-based approaches can successfully be scaled up, replicated and/or mainstreamed to create a sustainable solution to providing energy services. Coupled with a dynamic partnership and collaborative effort between the national and local governments, civil society, the private sector and the community, scaling up can result in significant positive development impacts at the macro-level by influencing national policies and development priorities.

 

14 April 2006 Energy Services for the Millennium Development Goals, a joint publication of the UNDP, UN Millennium Project, the World Bank, and the joint UNDP-World Bank Energy Sector Management Assistance Programme (ESMAP). This report underscores the importance of energy services for the MDG agenda, stressing three types of services in particular: modern fuels for cooking and heating; electricity for public services; and motive power for productive uses in communities. The report offers practical recommendations for energy planning exercises.

 

6 October 2005 - ESI Africa Newsletter: African Microhydro Knowledge Network. On 27-28 April representatives from 20 African governments gathered in Vienna, Austria, to launch the African Microhydro Knowledge Network. The event was convened to review the preparatory activities for the 'First regional micro/mini hydropower capacity development and investment projects in rural electricity access in Sub-Saharan Africa'. The event was co-sponsored by UNDP-GEF, UNIDO, IEFP, and the African Development Bank (ADB).

 

6 October 2005 - 2004 Report on the Thematic Trust Fund on Energy for Sustainable Development. The energy fund has been instrumental in linking country-level demand for energy services with wider development assistance discussions, expanding public-private partnerships, and better positioning UNDP on energy and the MDGs. This report assesses the fund's outputs and impacts.

 

9 September 2005 - Scaling up Modern Energy Services in East Africa.  This report outlines a strategy for increasing access to energy services to meet the Millennium Development Goals in East Africa.  It offers suggestions for possible energy interventions, their costs and impacts. This initiative is supported by UNDP and GTZ, with funding made available through the Global Village Energy Partnership (GVEP). Download Report

 

17 August 2005 - Energizing the Millennium Development Goals: A Guide to Energy's Role in Reducing Poverty. This new guide aims to help development practitioners understand the role of energy services in reaching the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). With Q&A explanations and case examples, it offers an overview of pertinent issues and suggests how to address energy within broader efforts to attain the MDGs. Download PDF.

 

3 August 2005 - A regional workshop on Electricity Access and Development Challenge in Africa was held in Nairobi, Kenya, 13-14 July 2005. The meeting was organised by AFREPREN/FWD and co-sponsored by UNDP as a partner to the GNESD. The objective was to engage regional policy makers in applying the GNESD energy access recommendations to their local context and to highlight the need for enhancing electricity access among the poor.

 

27 July 2005 - The Energy Challenge for Achieving the Millennium Development Goals.  This UN-Energy paper focuses on the importance of energy for achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).  It was drafted collectively by the United Nations (UN) agencies, programmes and organizations working in the area of energy, reflecting their insights and expertise. 22 July 2005 - From UN News: Lack of modern fuels kills 1.6 million people per year, according to newly released UN-Energy report, The Energy Challenge for Achieving the Millennium Development Goals. The report also argues that the lack of modern fuels entrenches poverty, constrains delivery of social services, limits opportunities for women, and erodes environmental sustainability.  Read UN News article or the report's press release.

 

3 June 2005 - Meeting on Productive Uses of Renewable Energy. A meeting was held in Bangkok, Thailand on May 9-11, 2005, gathering leading experts from academia, project practitioners and other donor agencies.  The meeting, held over three days, explored in detail how to develop markets for renewable energy technology (RETs) in off-grid areas focusing on productive uses of RETs as the entry point for market development. Energy Week 200523 May 2005 - Energy Week 2005 took place in Washington, DC on March 14-16, 2005. The yearly event brings together World Bank Group staff and energy development practitioners for a three-day conference focused on issues affecting energy services in developing countries. 7 Mar. 2005 - Stuck in the Past: Energy, Environment and Poverty in Serbia and Montenegro. Energy use in Serbia and Montenegro is unsustainable, hindering growth, poverty reduction and human development. 28 Feb. 2005 - "Smoke in the Kitchen: Health impacts of indoor air pollution in developing countries."   UNDP hosted the seminar on 8 February, 2005 with support from the Intermediate Technology Development Group, the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the World Health Organisation. 14 Feb. 2005 - Energy for Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific Region: Challenges and Lessons from UNDP Projects.  Publication features case studies of seven UNDP projects on energy for sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region and offers valuable lessons for consideration.

 

 

27 Jan. 2005 - Achieving the MDGs: The role of energy services. This report is a product of a research endeavor to analyze what effects targeted energy services in Brazil, the Philippines and Mali have on the countries’ attainment of MDG goals.

UNDP and the WHO are marking World Rural Women’s Day by drawing attention to Indoor Air Pollution - one of the major causes of death and disease in the world’s poorest countries.
