Commission
on Sustainable Development, 9th Session
New York, 16 - 27 April 2001
Energy was a key issue under consideration during the 9th session of the CSD. Numerous challenges
and recommendations were identified and ministers affirmed the critical role of energy in sustainable
development. In the Chairman’s summary of the high-level segment, it is concluded that “The
main challenge continues to be the provision of energy services to over 2 billion people in developing
countries currently without access to such services.” In this context, some proposed that the
World Summit on Sustainable Development should adopt a target of cutting by half by 2015 the proportion
of people without access to clean fuels and electricity.
