Partnerships

UNDP is uniquely placed to build on its in-country presence and ability to work across sectors to address complex poverty and equity issues related to energy services provision and utilization. The Common Country Assessments (CCAs) and the Country Cooperation Frameworks (CCFs) present opportunities to identify integrated solutions to energy and development bottlenecks as well as UNDP’s role as coordinator for the UN system.

The significant role of the World Bank and multilateral development banks in providing investment financing in the energy sector and leading energy sector reform is strengthened through UNDP’s attention to poverty and equity dimensions in policy definition and investment planning. UNDP’s role includes support for national authorities in convening and implementing multi-stakeholder dialogue processes to bring together sectoral planning authorities, consumer groups and representatives of industry to improve energy and development outcomes. UNDP’s strategic partnership with the World Bank through the joint UNDP/World Bank Energy Sector Management Assistance Programme (ESMAP) will continue and become more important in looking at sustainable energy policy options.

UNDP also maintains partnerships on energy with world-class institutions from the North and South including the World Energy Council, the International Energy Initiative, numerous universities, NGO’s and private sector groups working on related issues such as the E-7 Network of Utilities and World Business Council for Sustainable Development.

In preparation for the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), UNDP has developed three strategic partnerships:
Global Network on Sustainable Energy
Global Village Energy Partnership
LPG Challenge
