Energy for Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific Region: Challenges and Lessons from UNDP Projects
Editors: Sooksiri Chamsuk, Kamal Rijal, and Minoru Takada This publication features case studies of seven UNDP projects on energy for sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region and offers valuable lessons for consideration. The most important lessons include: a) participation is the key to successful delivery of modern energy services in rural areas; b) technology options must remain open and be development-needs driven; and c) policies to promote energy services for productive applications can maximize development effectiveness. The case studies also suggest that country diversities will offer different entry points for energy in the context of poverty reduction and, therefore, a "one size fits all" approach should be avoided.
