    Summary of Dialogue Sessions:

       Wednesday 3 May, 2006


    •  "Energy for the Achievement of the MDGs" (1:30 - 2:00 pm)

    Keynote: Jeffrey Sachs, Director, Earth Institute at Columbia University, and Special Advisor to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

    In his keynote address, Jeffrey Sachs stressed that the Millennium Development Goals will not be reached without expanding the availability of modern energy services to the poor. His address also served to launch the newly published report Energy Services for the Millennium Development Goals.

    •  "Expanding Modern Energy Services to All: Is it Feasible?" (2:00 - 3:00 pm)

    •  "Sharing Lessons on National Energy Intervention Costing Exercises" (6:00 - 7:30 pm)

    Columbia University students presented their study on costing of national energy strategies in Senegal for achieving the MDGs in that country.

    •  "Energy Security and its Implications for the Poor" (12:30 - 1:45 pm)

    This dialogue session looked at the key issues concerning the affordability and volatility of energy services on the rural poor.  The panel provided some very interesting research and case studies, covering a global, regional and country-level perspective.

    •  "Increasing Access to Energy Services for the Poor" (1:45 - 3:00 pm)

    This dialogue session emphasized the need to improve partnerships to promote access to energy services in order to meet the MDGs.

    In this dialogue session, the panel discussed the role of environmental financing options, and the MDG Carbon Facility in particular, to bring need resources to LDCs and develop projects with MDG impact.
