The Global Drylands InitiativeThe Global Drylands Imperative is an informal network of donors, NGOs and individuals with an interest in the implementation of the Convention to Combat Desertication. The GDI periodically promotes issues of importance for drylands development. The usual way that this is done is to commission papers that challenge common assumptions held by policy-makers and others. The papers are peer-reviewed by the broad membership of the GDI and all have been presented at Conferences of the Parties (COP) of the Convention to Combat Desertification. To date, six "challenge papers have been written" and presented to COP: The latter two papers, and the debate they initiated, permitted the preparation of GEF projects on pastoralism and mobility and on land tenure innovation. More recently, the GDI has tackled issues of synergies between the Convention to Combat Desertification and the Convention on Biodiversity. A paper was presented to a meeting of the Global Biodiversity Forum: Further involvement of the GDI in drylands biodiversity issues is being planned for Convention on Biodiversity COPs. |
