a)
International Arid Lands Consortium (IALC)
IALC is an independent, nonprofit research organization supporting ecological sustainability in arid and semiarid lands worldwide. It informs about its current activities, funded projects, fellowship programme and provides an online newsletter.
b)
Environmental and Societal Impact Group (ESIG)
ESIG's mission is to conduct a coordinated research and outreach program on the societal implications of atmospheric and related environmental processes, in order to build an improved base of knowledge for anticipating and responding to atmospheric science-related issues. Its internet-site features research, projects, publications, research and newsletters on these topics.
c) International Centre for Research and Training on Seabuckthorn (ICRTS)
ICRTS aims at promoting an underutilized crop with significant potential and capacity to play a crucial role in the development of arid and semi-arid lowlands and fragile mountain areas and to address issues of global dimensions. The website contains information about the benefits and significance of Seabuckthorn.
d) International Development Research Centre (IDRC)
IDRC is a public corporation created by the Parliament of Canada to help researchers and communities in the developing world find solutions to their social, economic, and environmental problems. Several research projects and publications are dealing with desertification.
e) MEDALUS III
MEDALUS III is an international research project to investigate the effects of desertification on land use in Mediterranean Europe. The website contains annual reports, project information and a user manual.
f) International Soil Reference and Information Centre (ISRIC)
The International Soil Reference and Information Centre, ISRIC, is a centre for documentation, research, and training about the world's soils, with emphasis on the resources of developing countries.
g) Noragric - Centre for International Environment and Development Studies
Noragric focuses on sustainable agriculture, food security, natural resource management and community development through research, education and field assignments. Noragric's main purpose is to promote equitable development and community empowerment through generating and disseminating knowledge.
h) Office of Arid Land Studies (OALS)
OALS is a multidisciplinary teaching, research, and information unit in the College of Agriculture at the University of Arizona in Tucson. It publishes the Arid lands Newsletter. Each issue of the Newsletter focuses on a different topic, i.e. ecotourism or urban agriculture.
i) Remote Monitoring in the Arid Southwest
The Caltech Arid Region Remote Monitoring group in the division of Geological and Planetary Sciences believes that forecasting of desertification will become possible in the future, and that monitoring of arid lands using new and future satellite remote sensing technologies will be important in future management of arid lands.
j) Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR)
Created in 1971, the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) is an association of public and private members supporting a system of 16 Future Harvest Centers that work in more than 100 countries to mobilize cutting-edge science to reduce hunger and poverty, improve human nutrition and health, and protect the environment.
k) International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI)
International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works at the crossroads of livestock and poverty, bringing high-quality science and capacity-building to bear on poverty reduction and sustainable development for poor livestock keepers and their communities.
l) The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT)
ICRISAT is a non-profit, apolitical, international organization devoted to sciencebased agricultural development. We're one of the 16 Future Harvest Centers of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).
m) International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA)
ICARDA's mission is to improve the welfare of poor people and alleviate poverty through research and training in dry areas of the developing world, by increasing the production, productivity and nutritional quality of food, while preserving and enhancing the natural resource base.
n) The International Council for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF)
The International Council for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF) was created in response to a visionary study in the mid-1970s led by forester John Bene of Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC). The study coined the term 'agroforestry' and called for global recognition of the key role trees play on farms. This led to the establishment of ICRAF in 1978 to promote agroforestry research in developing countries.
o) CGIAR System-Wide Program on Collective Action and Property Rights (CAPRi)
CAPRi aims to contribute to policies and practices that alleviate rural poverty by analyzing and disseminating knowledge on the ways that collective action and property rights institutions influence the efficiency, equity, and sustainability of natural resource use. CAPRi fosters research and promotes collaboration on institutional aspects of natural resource management between Future Harvest Centers and National Agricultural Research Institutes.
The program is one of several intercenter initiatives of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). Its Secretariat is hosted by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI)
p) Science and Development Network
The Science and Development Network (SciDev.Net) aims to provide reliable and authoritative information about science and technology for the developing world.Their goal is to help both individuals and organisations in developing countries make informed decisions about how science and technology can improve economic and social development
