Côte d’Ivoire launches first National Action Plan for Implementation of
Security Council Resolution 1325

Information Note

In January 2008, the Government of Côte d’Ivoire, with the support of UNDP, UNIFEM and the Government of Norway, launched its first five-year national plan (2008-2012) for the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women and Peace and Security. This plan sets an example for other African countries where armed conflict is causing a disproportionate and devastating impact on women.

This plan focuses on four priority areas: 1) protection of women and girls’ rights against all sexual violence during and after armed conflict; 2) inclusion of women’s rights in development policies and programmes; 3) participation of women in recovery; and 4) increased participation of women in politics.

The plan identifies specific results for each priority area, and indicators to monitor progress against these results. For instance, the plan commits to the creation of a national police unit to deal with all cases of sexual violence against women and girls. The plan also sets a minimum target of 30 percent of women occupying decision-making posts in political parties, public administration and other national institutions.

UNDP, along with other UN agencies and bilateral donors, will provide support for the implementation of this action plan. To read the full United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women and Peace and Security, click here (pdf).
