Giving hope in the midst of conflict - UNDP’s livelihoods programme in Somalia
UNDP has achieved encouraging results in flooded and war-torn South Central Somalia. Despite a fragile security situation and operational obstacles, UNDP has been able to assist more than 11,000 households in the Middle Shebelle and Bay regions with livelihood and employment opportunities. Small grants were provided to entrepreneurs launching micro-businesses and production workshops, and more than 4,500 households were supported in their livestock, beekeeping, poultry, and farming operations. Another 7,000 households were connected with short-term employment opportunities related to the rehabilitation of roads, catchment basins and canals damaged by flooding. More than half of those benefiting from the UNDP programme are women, an important achievement in a country where women and girls bear the brunt of both natural disasters and the decades-long civil war. Internally displaced persons, forced from their homes by hostilities, were also among those receiving assistance.
