The Arab states consist of 23 countries and territories and have an estimated population of 320 million people. A region diverse in economics and culture, it has been subject to many natural disasters and conflicts. UNDP work in the Arab states includes addressing sexual and gender-based violence, promoting peace-building and reintegration of former combatants, clearing remnants of war and improving women's access to justice, among other things.

- More than 17 million people in the Arab region have been forced by violent conflict to flee their homes, making this the region of the world with the highest number of refugees and internally displaced persons.
- Desertification threatens about 2.9 million square kilometres, or roughly one-fifth of the total
area of Arab countries.
- An estimated one in five people in the Arab region lives below the internationally recognized poverty
threshold of US $2-per-day.
