Africa

Africa consists of 53 countries and has an estimated population of more than 900 million people. It is home to 34 of the world’s 48 poorest countries and has been subject to multiple conflicts and natural disasters. UNDP work in Africa includes: addressing sexual and gender-based violence through community-based programmes; preventing conflict and supporting disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of former combatants; and encouraging inclusion of disaster risk reduction policies and programmes in national plans.

Fighting impunity: addressing sexual violence in Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo
DRCIt was a beautiful Saturday afternoon. She approached me when I was about to take a picture in the centre of Goma, the old run-down town on the northern shores of Lake Kivu. A beautiful girl in her late teens, timidly holding out her hand for a few Congolese francs. Panicky glances, a timorous encounter.
