Building National Processes and Institutions for Conflict Management

UNDP promotes the establishment of credible institutions and processes that can peacefully manage disputes. In collaboration with UN departments, agencies and partners, UNDP aims to build “sustainable national infrastructures for peace” that allow “societies and their governments to resolve conflicts internally and with their own skills, institutions and resources.”

Small Grants Programme for Civil Society

Since 2004, UNDP has sponsored on a small grants program for civil society organizations in conflict and post-conflict situations. This initiative transforms UNDP’s engagement with civil society organizations (CSOs) from a relationship of service provision to one of genuine partnership. The program aimed to develop the capacity of CSOs to build peace through dialogue, recover democratic and civilian institutions, revitalize economies, and build sustainable partnerships with UNDP country offices. Experiences in three pilot countries, Sri Lanka, Liberia and Colombia were documented in “Experiences from the field: UNDP-CSO partnership for conflict prevention” published in 2005.
