Our Mandate

The February 2001 UNDP Executive Board reaffirmed that crisis prevention and disaster mitigation should be integral parts of sustainable human development strategies.

UNDP helps countries prevent and recover from armed conflicts and natural disasters through advocacy, capacity building, conflict sensitive development, development of tools and methodologies, gender equality, knowledge networking, strategic planning and programming, and policy and standard setting.

Our Goals and Results

GOALS

The Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery (BCPR) has developed a 2007-2011 strategy, which identifies two outcome areas: prevention and risk reduction, and recovery. Under these areas, BCPR has identified eight specific development outcomes to which UNDP contributes.

For each outcome, a set of corresponding outputs has been identified. They represent the core set of deliverables that BCPR will promote. Outputs are owned by UNDP country offices working with national partners.

Also included in the strategy are indicative activities that BCPR may undertake in order to support the identified outputs. Through the annual work-planning process and in consultation with country offices, the Regional Bureaus, and the Bureau for Development Policy, BCPR will determine its specific activities for the next five years.

RESULTS

BCPR is developing a process for monitoring and evaluating the initiatives carried out under this strategy. In addition to assessing progress toward the outcomes and outputs that make up the strategy, the evaluation system will consider BCPR’s effectiveness in supporting country offices, transparency and accountability in the use of donor funds, and efficiency and cost related to its operations and administration. BCPR will ensure that these indicators are consistent with the new UNDP 2008-2011 Strategic Plan (word doc).
