Priya Gajraj
Advisor, Crisis Prevention and Recovery, UNDP Niger
Priya has been an advisor on crisis prevention and recovery issues with the UNDP Niger office since 2006. She has set up the unit and programme within the country office where her responsibilities include providing programmatic and technical support on both conflict and natural risk reduction. In particular, Priya has worked with the Office of the Prime Minister in integrating crisis prevention into the ongoing Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers process following the 2005 crisis. She has also managed a reintegration programme of ex-combatants with the government and other donors; initiated community-level recovery support following last year’s floods in partnership with non-governmental organizations; and is now undertaking a crisis development analysis exercise for the country together with the government and other partners. Priya has also worked with UNDP in Indonesia, Rwanda and at headquarters.
Rui Gomes
Head of Pro-Poor Policy Unit and Policy Advisor, UNDP Timor-Leste
Rui ensures the strategic direction of the Poverty Reduction Unit programme activities, taking into consideration structural problems in the country—such as poverty, inequality and youth unemployment—their impact on potential conflict in the future, and their link to conflict prevention strategies. The lead author of Timor-Leste’s second Human Development Report (HDR) 2006, Rui acts as the UNDP focal point for poverty reduction strategies, the Millennium Development Goals and National HDRs. He is currently engaged in the preparation of the third National HDR, which will examine institutional capacity to respond to crisis while looking at the impact of Timor-Leste’s natural resources on economic growth and poverty reduction. Prior to his current position, Rui was Programme Officer & Policy Adviser for UNDP Timor-Leste. He holds an MA in Development Studies from Murdoch University, Western Australia and a PhD in Development Economics from London South Bank University, United Kingdom.
