 Owen Shumba
Regional Programme Officer, South Africa

As a Regional Programme Officer, Owen provides programmatic and technical support to UNDP country offices, UN country teams, national governments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) on disaster risk reduction (DRR).  This includes providing technical support on DRR capacity needs assessment, development of national action plans for capacity development in DRR, and implementation of the national action plans. Owen has 11 years of experience working on community-based natural resource management, disaster reduction, livelihoods development, food security and refugee programme/project research, implementation and management.  Before joining UNDP, he spent 10 years with two regional environment and livelihoods development NGOs. Owen has an MSc in Tropical & Sub-Tropical Agriculture from the University of Leipzig in Germany.


Irene Stephen
Emergency Information Officer, DRM Programme UNDP, New Delhi


Irene has been with the Government of India-UNDP Disaster Risk Management (DRM) Programme since 2003 in the capacity of an Emergency Information Officer, UNV Specialist. Her responsibilities include information management and coordination for DRM programme activities and the United Nations Disaster Management Team (UNDMT). She also assists in assessments and programme planning and ensures that the programme and UNDMT teams are kept abreast of emergency situations, such as the Bihar, Orissa flood of 2003, the 2004 tsunami, and the earthquake affecting areas of Jammu and Kashmir in 2005. Irene has a Master’s in Planning and Geography and started her professional career as an Environmental Planner, where she focused on environment planning and management for settlements.
