Regional Climate Risk Management Workshop for Asia, 23-26 April 2007, Kathmandu

Climate variability can affect multiple sectors of a country’s development including agriculture, food security, water resources, health and land use. Future changes in the climate are expected to create new patterns of risk, and perhaps higher risks generally. Better management of climate-related risks is key to preventing future disasters and protecting development gains. UNDP’s Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery (BCPR), the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) have framed a strategic approach to Climate Risk Management (CRM). This partnership seeks to identify strategies for managing both short-term climate variability and longer term climate change impacts across regions. In view of theses objectives, the Regional Climate Risk Management Workshop will commence the development and implementation of a joint portfolio of CRM projects for Asia. The workshop will bring together staff from UNDP BCPR, GEF, IRI, eight UNDP country office environment and disaster risk management units, relevant government agencies, and technical specialists from the region. The workshop hopes to achieve an Asia-wide partnership for adopting a CRM approach that will be instructive to other regions.

AVPP Consultative Review Meeting, 30-31 January 2007, Panama City

The Armed Violence Prevention Programme (AVPP) is a collaborative programme, initiated in 2005 by UNDP and the World Health Organization (WHO), that promotes effective responses to armed violence. The key objective of the meeting was to review outcomes of phase I and identify priorities and interests for phase II. More than 60 people from UNDP headquarters, UNDP country offices, other UN agencies and non-governmental organizations participated. The meeting defined a number of challenges for the future including: conceptual clarification, further research on key issues, coordination of data collection and information sharing, greater gender sensitivity in programming, sustaining political will, and identifying ‘who does what best, and at what stage.’ The UNDP/WHO collaboration has already demonstrated some of the benefits of combining the strengths of different organizations and there was strong support for continuing the AVPP. The agencies committed to circulating a revised concept paper for Phase II, reflecting the findings and recommendations from the meeting. At the global level, AVPP will be further addressed through a series of follow-up regional consultations on the Geneva Declaration on Armed Violence and Development, the first of which will be held in Guatemala City, 23-24 April 2007.
