What We Do
Training

UNDP has provided extensive support to countries in their efforts to strengthen national capacity development programmes. Capacity development is an essential component of UNDP efforts to tackle the dual challenges of securing development gains and promoting opportunities for continued sustainable progress. The Millennium Development Goals, benchmarks for human development progress by 2015, provide the framework for capacity development initiatives for the COs, including disaster risk reduction.

More specifically, capacity development initiatives related to disaster risk reduction aim to put in place the appropriate policies, strategies, legal frameworks and institutional structures for sustainable disaster risk reduction through technical assistance and training. Currently, UNDP is supporting initiatives in 166 countries in all regions covered by the organization.

More detailed profile sheets are available on each country programme featured in this Web section.

UN Disaster Management Training Programme

Human resource development is an essential component of capacity building and UNDP has been supporting disaster reduction training through the development of the Disaster Management Training Programme (DMTP) in Central America, south-eastern Europe and Southern Africa as well as through developing the capacities of its own staff.

DMTP has conducted more than 70 workshops since 1991, benefiting approximately 6,000 participants in Africa, Arab States, Asia and the Pacific, Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States and Latin America and the Caribbean. The workshops have been catalytic in supporting capacity building in areas such as the revision of national disaster management plans, the adoption of relevant laws and regulations, the creation and strengthening of national and UN Disaster Management Teams, contingency planning ect. They often generate follow-up training events cascading down learning to community levels and initiate technical projects supported by UNDP, other partner agencies and donor governments.
